Shape Up RI’s Summer Competition Kick-off

PROVIDENCE, RI – Kicking off its summer program and pledging more commitment to the Mount Hope neighborhood* of Providence, Shape Up RI holds an event today, Saturday, June 19 from 2-4pm in Billy Taylor Park at the corner of Camp and Cypress Streets. Shape Up RI is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the health of Rhode Islanders by recruiting teams and peer groups to pursue healthy lifestyles through increased physical activity and better nutrition.

At the June 19 event, guests can expect to register for and learn more about the summer weight-loss program and Shape Up RI tools, like pedometers and fruit-and-vegetable trackers. There will also be free snacks, basketball, and other fun and games.

* Mount Hope is an area of Providence that has been identified by the Urban League of RI as a target area for improving chronic disease management and addressing health disparities in part due to the high concentration of Black / African-Americans in the neighborhood as well as the number of families who live at 1.5% below the poverty level.
