10 – 12: Glucose Screenings

A collaborative event, “Live Empowered” is an African American initiative to create increased awareness and education regarding the impact and seriousness of Diabetes for people of African descent. The event includes opportunities for diabetes education, free food, fun giveaways, and free glucose screenings. Presenters on April 10 include The Urban League of Rhode Island and Urban Health Watch; Diabetes Multicultural Coalition; Neighborhood Health Plan of RI, Blue Cross Blue Shield of RI, Eleanor Borge, a Certified Aerobics Instructor, Glen Prescodd, MD, MPH; and Carrie Bridges from the RI Department of Health.

Free and open to the public; free giveaways and refreshments is hosting a special movie viewing and community health discussion on Saturday, April 10. The film and discussion will be part of the Live Empowered! Diabetes Awareness Day, and the film will start at 11:30 AM. Community members who come for the film will be encouraged to pursue screenings and consultations on-site from the experts who are part of the Diabetes Awareness Event. Those who attend for diabetes tests and information are encouraged to attend to learn additional strategies about staying healthy and to hear from another network of experts and providers.
