Featuring a special keynote address on “food as medicine”

On Saturday, September 26, 2009, the Miriam Hospital will hold its 18th annual Women’s Wellness Workshop – a daylong event designed to empower women with the information they need to stay healthy. The keynote address at the workshop will be on “food as medicine”

The day begins with a keynote presentation led by Mary Flynn, PhD, RD, LDN, chief research dietitian at The Miriam Hospital, who will present “Food as Medicine: Eating Your Way to a Healthier You.” Dr. Flynn will discuss which foods can help decrease one’s risk of chronic diseases and which foods can contribute to an increase risk of disease. She will also discuss the plant-based olive oil diet that she has been studying, which is composed primarily of foods that will improve health and could be used for long-term weight management.

Nationally recognized experts will also lead morning and afternoon workshops on a variety of topics, ranging from “Weighing the Options to a Healthier You” to “The Perfect Bra Fit” to “Treating and Beating Heart Disease.” At lunchtime, Dr. Flynn will team up with Chef Frank Terranova, a locally renowned chef, teacher, and television personality, for a healthy cooking demonstration.
